How ThreadFits Works

A shirt can't just be a shirt anymore.
It needs a founder story. A direct-to-consumer strategy. A proprietary fabric. Possibly a podcast. Sometimes all four.
Meanwhile, most of us are simply trying to figure out whether the collar will survive the washing machine.
Every shirt on ThreadFits is evaluated using the same framework. We wear it, wash it, inspect it, and compare it on a fixed scorecard.
The goal isn't to find the "best" shirt. People like different fits, fabrics, and budgets.
The goal is more useful: a repeatable way to compare shirts using the same criteria every time.

The Five Pillars

Every shirt receives a score from 1 to 10 across five categories. Those scores create the overall ThreadFits Score.

‍

Fabric & Feel

This is the first handshake. How does the fabric feel against the skin? Soft, breathable, structured, lightweight, substantial — or suspiciously synthetic? Does it drape naturally, or fight gravity the whole day?
A great fabric disappears while you're wearing it. A bad one becomes the entire conversation.

‍

Fit & Silhouette

Shirts don't live on hangers. They live on people who sit in meetings, drive cars, and walk through Costco.
We evaluate proportions, balance, sleeve shape, torso shape, and how the shirt behaves through an ordinary day. "Fits true to size" is not enough. We're interested in what the pattern is actually doing.

‍

Durability & Stability

This is where the washing machine joins the review team.
We look at shrinkage, pilling, collar retention, fading, shape retention, and recovery after repeated laundering. Many shirts look fantastic on Day One. Laundry Day Three is where the truth usually lives.

‍

Construction & Details

Collars. Seams. Stitching. Hems. Finishing.
Most people don't notice good construction. Everyone notices bad construction. Some shirts are surprisingly well engineered. Others are held together by optimism and marketing copy.

‍

Value

Value is not the same thing as price.
We've reviewed shirts sold next to rotisserie chickens that outperformed products costing many times as much — and expensive shirts that couldn't survive a normal dryer cycle. Value measures what you actually get for what you spend.

How A Review Is Done

Our process is deliberately boring. That's usually a good sign.
Every shirt starts the same way: wear it, wash it, wear it again, wash it again — then form opinions. Whenever possible, shirts go through repeated wash and dry cycles while we watch shrinkage, pilling, collar behavior, shape retention, and overall wear.
This isn't laboratory testing. It is a structured real-world evaluation meant to answer normal questions: Does it fit? Does it stay fitting? Does it survive laundry day? Does it still deserve hanger space afterward?

‍

What We Don't Claim

ThreadFits is not the final authority on taste. We don't know your body type, climate, budget, or how you feel about oversized sleeves.
Two people can wear the same shirt and disagree. They're both allowed to be right. Brands change factories. Fabrics evolve.
What we promise is consistency: the same pillars, the same framework, the same chance for a shirt to impress us — or disappoint us.

How To Use The ThreadFits Score

Use the overall score to build a shortlist. Then read the pillar scores and the review.
A shirt can earn a strong total and still fail the one thing you care about most — collar structure, opacity, length, or whether $90 for a T-shirt feels sane.
The score gets a shirt into the conversation. The details decide whether it belongs in your closet.
ThreadFits isn't trying to tell you what to buy. We're just trying to make sure the washing machine gets a vote.
